NATURAL DISASTER SETTINGS: A FERTILE GROUND FOR GENDER BASED VIOLENCE IN UGANDA

This policy brief examines how natural disaster settings in Uganda may increase the risk of gender-based violence (GBV), particularly sexual violence and intimate partner violence. The study focuses on the 2010 Bududa landslides and their aftermath, investigating how conditions such as breakdown of social control, loss of livelihood strategies, and humanitarian aid may create increased vulnerability to GBV. The research aims to contribute to Uganda Vision 2024’s goal of eliminating harmful practices and to inform policy reform for effective GBV redress in natural disaster settings amid increasing climate change impacts.
