Implementing hearing screening among children aged 0–59 months at established immunization clinics in Uganda: A multi-center study

A cross-sectional multi-center study conducted at immunization clinics at three regional referral hospitals in Uganda to introduce hearing screening services by non-specialist health workers and describe the prevalence and factors associated with failed hearing screening in children aged 0-59 months. The study used two-stage Transient Evoked Oto-acoustic emissions (TEOAEs) screening and found a 3.7% prevalence of failed hearing screening among 1217 children recruited. Risk factors for failed screening included rural residence, low birth weight, relatives with hearing loss, hospital admission after birth, and history of childhood suppurative otitis media.
