Adherence to malaria management guidelines by health care workers in the Busoga sub‑region, eastern Uganda

This study assessed health care worker adherence to malaria case management guidelines in the Busoga sub-region, Uganda. Health facility assessments, health care worker surveys, and patient exit interviews were conducted at government and private health facilities. The study found that 86.9% of enrolled patients received appropriate malaria case management (defined as being tested and only prescribed artemether-lumefantrine if positive), though adherence was lower in private facilities (50.7%). While malaria testing services were available at over 85% of facilities and most positive patients received appropriate antimalarial treatment, gaps were noted mainly in the private sector and AL supply chain issues were identified.
