Acceptability of an online peer support group as a strategy to improve antiretroviral therapy adherence among young people in Kampala district, Uganda: qualitative findings

This qualitative study assessed the acceptability of WhatsApp peer support groups as a strategy to improve antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence among young people living with HIV (YPLHIV) in Kampala, Uganda. The study conducted focus group discussions with 26 YPLHIV and interviews with health providers between July-August 2022. Results showed that WhatsApp peer support groups were overall acceptable, with participants viewing them as convenient, cost-effective, and capable of reducing stigma while enhancing emotional support and ART adherence. However, concerns were raised about privacy and costs of internet access, particularly for younger adolescents.
