Sustainable urban transportation planning: Integrating an electrified metro system into Kampala metropolis

This study examines Kampala’s transportation sustainability using the TIMES-VEDA model to explore four scenarios: Business-as-Usual (BAU), Reduction in Electricity Consumption (REC), Renewable Electricity Portfolio (REP), and Carbon Reduction Target (CRT). The research analyzes the Kampala metropolis energy system to provide evidence-based decision-making foundations, aligning with UN SDGs 7, 11, & 13, Uganda’s Vision 2040, and NDPIII. The analysis demonstrates that sustainability is achievable through a holistic approach featuring mass rapid transit anchored by an electrified metro system to advance green mobility. The KAMPALA-TIMES model reveals that region-specific policy packages, particularly the CRT scenario, achieve significant decarbonization, promoting eco-friendly multimodal transportation and paving the way for sustainable urban development until 2060.
