Assessing the Information Needs and Sources for Sustainable Livelihoods in the Fisher Communities of Lake Victoria, Uganda

This study assesses the information needs of fisher communities around Lake Victoria, Uganda, and identifies the sources they use to meet these needs for sustainable livelihoods. Using a mixed-methods approach including surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions, the research reveals key information needs such as weather patterns, fish stock levels, market prices, sustainable fishing practices, financial support, fish quality, legal regulations, health and safety, security, and communication. The study highlights challenges in accessing digital information including high costs, connectivity issues, and language barriers, while also examining how communities use various technologies like radios, telephones, televisions, and mobile technology to access information.
