Knowledge and practices of traditional treatment of chicken diseases using medicinal plants by indigenous communities in Najjembe sub-county, Buikwe district central Uganda

An ethnoveterinary survey conducted among 150 chicken farmers in Najjembe sub-county, Buikwe District, Central Uganda from January to September 2021. The study documents medicinal plants used in the management of chicken diseases, identifying 59 plant species from 59 genera and 31 families, with Aloe vera, Capsicum frutescens, and Nicotiana tabacum being the most cited. The research found that leaves were the most used plant parts (66.1%) and were largely prepared as decoctions (38.9%). Most plant species had high Informant Consensus Factor (ICF) values greater than 0.7, indicating strong community consensus on their effectiveness for treating various chicken ailments.
