Plasmodium falciparum genetic diversity and multiplicity of infection among asymptomatic and symptomatic malaria-infected individuals in Uganda
This cross-sectional study analyzed 225 P. falciparum isolates from both asymptomatic and symptomatic malaria patients in Uganda, ranging in age from 6 months to ≥ 18 years. Using seven neutral microsatellite markers, the study investigated P. falciparum genetic diversity and multiplicity of infection (MOI). Results showed high genetic diversity in both groups with mean expected heterozygosity ranging from 0.79 to 0.81, and no significant difference in MOI between asymptomatic and symptomatic infections. The study found that asymptomatic carriers harbor a diverse range of parasites, posing challenges for malaria control and necessitating targeted interventions.
