Makerere University PhD Research Grant Awards Launched
Today, Tuesday March 7, 2023 Prof. Henry Alinaitwe, the Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor In-Charge of Finance and Administration, Makerere University representing Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, Vice Chancellor, Makerere University launched the Makerere University Research and Innovations Fund (Mak-RIF) Round 4, Track 2: PhD Research Grant Awards. This is the first of its kind cohort of awards and it will benefit 117 researchers in Makerere University. These awards are in addition to the 865 currently funded multidisciplinary research and innovation projects.
Since Financial Year 2019/2020 to-date, Makerere University through the Research and Innovations Fund (Mak-RIF) has committed to award projects worth Ugx. 90 billion. “For this and all the other support from the Government of the Republic of Uganda, we are grateful. We anticipate utilizing approximately 3 billion Uganda Shillings to support the PhD Grant Awards in the university” Prof. Alinaitwe noted. This was yet another exciting moment especially because it is one of those opportunities Makerere University will directly leverage as a research led university.
Prof. Fred Masagazi Masaazi said “The Government is looking for research and innovations that will positively impact on the lives of the people in our societies. I urge all of you to use the money given to you for the purpose it was meant, the Mak-RIF Grants Management Committee with support from the Secretariat are here to support you through the process. We are all looking forward to the fruits of the research and innovation outputs as solutions to community challenges”.

We pledge our very best to not only contribute to Uganda’s development efforts but also generate potentially transformative solutions to address Uganda’s most pressing challenges” said Mr. Gerald Ahabwe, President, Makerere University PhD Fellows.
