Lira University and Mak-RIF Engagement
On 12th June 2025, the Makerere University Research and Innovations Fund (Mak-RIF) Secretariat hosted a delegation from the Lira University Research and Innovations Team for a benchmarking visit. The purpose of the visit was to share experiences, institutional frameworks, and best practices in research grants management, with the aim of supporting Lira University in enhancing its internal research systems.
The benchmarking session was held in the Mak-RIF Boardroom and served as a dynamic platform for mutual learning and exchange. Key areas of discussion included:
- Institutional setup and coordination of research and innovation activities
- Internal grants management processes
- Monitoring, evaluation, and reporting mechanisms
- Stakeholder engagement strategies
- Structure and benefits of a centralized one-stop centre model for research services
The Team Lead from Lira University commended Mak-RIF for its well-organized and impactful grants management system. He noted that the insights obtained during the session would play a significant role in informing the design and development of Lira University’s internal research granting framework.
Furthermore, the Team Lead expressed a keen interest in adopting a one-stop centre system, modelled after Mak-RIF, to streamline research support services and improve efficiency and service delivery across their university.
The Mak-RIF Secretariat is encouraged by the level of engagement and enthusiasm demonstrated by the Lira University delegation. The visit marked a promising step towards fostering institutional collaboration and peer learning in research and innovation management.
Mak-RIF remains committed to supporting such engagements and looks forward to continued collaboration with Lira University as part of a broader effort to strengthen Uganda’s national research and innovation ecosystem.
